Teacher Attrition Drops to 9.8%
INDEX teacher attrition fell to 9.8% in 2024-25, down 21% from the Covid peak and among the lowest rates in a decade. Still, turnover remains 50% higher than the 6.6% low recorded in 2011-12. Attrition among Teachers of Color is 13.5%, and non-teacher attrition averages 8.7%.
Only a Third of INDEX Schools Are Led by Women
Women lead 34% of INDEX schools, but representation varies sharply. Women lead 40% of PK8 schools and about a third of smaller co-ed PK12 and co-ed Middle/Upper schools. Among large co-ed PK12 schools with over 1,000 students, just 19% are led by a woman.
AP Participation Rises Over the Decade
Today, 46% of INDEX Upper School students take at least one AP exam, and 68% of scores earn a 4 or 5. Over 10 years, that’s a 12% rise in exam participation and a 17% jump in top scores.
Auctions Net $500 per Student
Annual auction net revenue now averages $500 per student (median: $370), up 11% since 2018-19. Over the same period, tuition and fees rose 32%.
New Buildings Average $730 per Square Foot
For the 20 INDEX schools completing new buildings in 2025, construction averaged $730 per square foot (median: $700). That’s a 4% increase over 2024 and a striking 65% jump from 2023 projects.
