93% of Schools Ban Student Phones

In a recent INDEX member survey, 93% of the 28 responding schools said they restrict student use of smart phones at school. 43% ban all student use during the school day, and 50% allow some student use during free time/breaks. Many schools have full bans in the Middle School and partial bans in the Upper School.

8 Percentage Point Increase in AP Test Takers

Over the last 10 years, the percentage of INDEX School students in the Upper School taking an AP exam has increased from 39% to 47%. Even as the percentage of students taking an exam has increased, the percentage exams receiving a 4 or 5 has remained constant at 60%.

80% of Schools Have Debt

80% of INDEX schools carry debt, with an average debt load of $21 Million and a debt-to-net assets ratio of 44%. 10 years ago, 80% of INDEX schools also had debt, but the debt-to-net assets ratio was 49% or 11% higher.

12% More Space, Double the Deferred Maintenance

Over the last 10 years, the square footage of building space per student has grown 12%. During the same period, estimated deferred maintenance per square foot has more than doubled.

Juneteenth is a Paid Holiday at 97% of Schools

In a recent INDEX member survey, 97% of the 59 responding schools give Juneteenth as a paid holiday.
