Upper School students’ participation in interscholastic sports has remained constant at 77% since INDEX started collecting data in 2013-14. Middle School students’ participation is at 84%, and this too has remained constant over the years.

14% of INDEX schools require Upper School participation in interscholastic sports, and 22% of schools require Middle School participation.
45% of Head Coaches are External Employees
45% of all head coaching positions are filled by external hires (meaning they are not otherwise employed at the school.) This is up 5 percentage points over the last 10 years. 60% of all assistant coach positions are filled by external hires. This is up from 58% 10 years ago.
50% of Coaches (Internal Employee) Coach More Than One Team
50% of internal employee coaches coach more than one team. Among external coaches, that percentage is 29%.
31% of Teachers Coach a Sport
31% of teachers at INDEX schools coach at least one sport. The range is wide, however, with some schools having nearly no teachers who coach to some with nearly 100% of teachers who coach.
